Saturn Corporation was founded as a subsidiary of General Motors. However, Saturn had its own production plant, models and even retailer network. The company was named after the Saturn rocket that transported astronauts to the moon in the 1960s.
Saturn was successful right from the start. Its good quality control system, reliable cars and increased worker control at the plant helped Saturn models earn stellar reviews. Saturn car models earned nearly two dozen awards from the early 1990s onwards, including Popular Mechanics' 1991 Design and Engineering Reward, the Best Small Wagon and Best Subcompact Value Awards for 1996 and the 2007 North American Car of the Year Award (given for the Saturn Aura).
Unfortunately, the company went downhill after GM became more involved than it had been previously. Workers were reshuffled, production was shifted to various GM production plants and Saturn sales began to dwindle from 2003 onwards. The line was discontinued in 2009 after General Motors filed for bankruptcy protection and decided to discontinue Saturn vehicle production. GM intended to sell Saturn to Penske but the deal fell through at the last minute.
