Plymouth vehicles were first produced by Chrysler in 1928 and remained in production for 73 years. They were made as a low-cost alternative to Chrysler's more expensive models. The name was derived from Plymouth binder twine, a type of twine that was particularly popular in the 1920s. The first Plymouth vehicles cost more than other low-cost cars of that era; however, they also include more amenities than other affordable vehicle models, making Plymouth cars appealing to people who wanted a comfortable, easy-to-drive car that did not cost too much money.

Over the years, Plymouth has built nearly forty passenger car models, ten van and truck models and over two dozen concept cars. Plymouth vehicles were particularly popular during the Great Depression and were in fact credited with keeping Chrysler afloat financially during this time. However, production was halted in mid-2001 as the company wanted to save money both on manufacturing and advertising. The very last Plymouth to be manufactured was a silver Neon, which was produced in June 2001.

“The person I spoke to on the phone was very pleasant, thorough and professional. He did not, however, provide an approximation of the time of arrival and I had to call for it. I was told "early afternoon" and the techs arrived at 4:30. I received no call to tell me the techs were running behind. That was the worst part of the experience. There were a number of things I could have accomplished had I known. The work itself was done well it seems - not sure if there are leaks or not till it rains - but I watched and they were conscientious of my vehicle and efficient. The workers were very respectful to me as well.”
